My Aunt Lydia

Lydia learns in 1938, after the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany, that she is of Jewish descent.
Despite the draconian persecution under the Nazi regime, she tries to lead a fulfilling life.

At 19, Lydia falls in love with Klaus Jochen from Berlin. Shaken by her feelings, she declares in Café
Central that Hitler has already lost the war.

This statement leads to Lydia being arrested by the Gestapo. She is imprisoned for a month. During
this time, Lydia discovers that she is pregnant by Klaus Jochen.

When she tells Klaus about the pregnancy, her world collapses again: Klaus Jochen is half-Jewish. With
his parents, he is living “underground” in Fulpmes to escape persecution by the National Socialists.

Klaus Jochen says he has no time for love and flees. The Gestapo arrests his parents, and Lydia is
left alone.

In Hinterbichl, a remote village in East Tyrol, Lydia experiences the end of the war, with her newborn
baby in her arms.
